Do You Really Need to Wear a Mouthguard?

A mouthguard is a rubber-like appliance that is worn over your teeth to help cushion them and your gums from the blows and shocks caused during physical activity or sport.

At Comfort Dental & Implant Centre, we advocate prevention over cure. If you engage in activities that are likely to impact your teeth and dental aesthetics, it’s much cheaper to invest in quality custom-fitted mouthguards than to later undergo extensive damage repair from injuries such as the loss of one or more teeth, chips, cracks, jaw fractures, and injuries to the soft tissues in your mouth.

Store Bought Mouthguards Vs.
Dentist Made Mouthguards

Although store-bought mouthguards are usually a cheaper alternative to dentist made custom-fitted sports mouthguards, they come with a price. Here are some major reasons why dentist-made mouthguards are better at protecting your teeth over the store-bought generic ones:

Poor Fit

Store bought mouthguards are not custom fitted which means there is a big risk that it won’t properly contour and cover the soft tissue as it should.

Insecure Fit

They don't fit as securely as the ones specifically designed for you. There is an increased risk of them falling out during the usage and potentially causing greater damage to your teeth.

Breathing and Speaking

Custom-made mouthguards do not restrict breathing or speaking or cause any of the discomfort often associated with store-bought options.

Sport-Specific Protection

Different sports have unique risks. Our dentists are well-equipped to customise each mouthguard to ensure maximum protection for your specific activity.

Durability

Custom-fitted mouthguards found to be more durable than store-bought options.

Personalisation

Besides the superior protection and quality, you can customise your mouthguard to match your personality.
