Children’s Week is an annual event celebrated in Australia during the fourth week of October. The week focuses the attention of the wider community on children, their needs and achievements.
As part of our support of Children’s Week, Comfort Dental Centre Buderim would like to emphasize the importance of dental hygiene at an early age.
If children have good oral habits and healthy teeth while young, they have a great chance of having them for life and avoiding dental disease.
But dental erosion and tooth decay are very common dental problems in Australia. In fact according to one study 42% of children in the age group of 5 to 10 years old suffer from tooth decay in their baby teeth. 1 out of 4 children in this age group live without any treatment for decay in their baby teeth.
So, this Children’s Week, let’s band together and improve the dental health of our children!
What Can Parents Do?
The number-one dental problem among preschoolers is tooth decay.
- One out of 10 two- year-olds already have one or more cavities
- By age three, 28% of children have one or more cavities
Some parents assume that cavities in baby teeth don’t matter, because those teeth eventually fall out to be replaced by permanent teeth. However, dental decay in baby teeth can negatively affect permanent teeth and lead to future dental problems.
Teach Good Dental Habits
The best way to protect your child’s teeth is through good dental habits. With the proper coaching children naturally adopt good oral hygiene practices. Parents need to supervise brushing to ensure that it removes as much plaque as possible. Also, keep an eye out for areas of brown or white spots that might be signs of early decay.
Any sign of tooth decay should mean a quick trip to the dentist.
As soon as your child has a tooth you should help them brush their teeth twice a day with a dab (size of a grain of rice) of fluoride toothpaste on a child-sized toothbrush that has soft bristles. For some children electric toothbrushes are both easier to use and more effective.
Amount of Toothpaste
At age 3, you can move up to using a pea-size amount of fluoride toothpaste, which helps prevent cavities. If your child doesn’t like the taste of the toothpaste, try another flavor. Try to teach your child not to swallow toothpaste.
Sugar is the number one food-borne villain. Make sure to always brush your child’s teeth after a sugary food item. In addition, do not allow your child to have any sugar-containing liquid in a sippy cup for a prolonged period, particularly at night, when it can lead to “baby bottle decay”.
The Australian Dental Association recommends that all children see a dentist and establish a “dental home” by age one. The sooner a child gets into a dental office, the less likely they will be anxious about dental care.
